Wearable Art   5 comments

First – hope everyone likes my new format!

This is only tangentially about schnauzers, but I wanted to share my first piece of wearable art. It’s a tank top that I designed and knit myself. I knit this tank in the months following the passing of my darling Checkers. I knit it while sitting in her favorite spot on the sofa, remembering her and in memory of her. I call it my Checkers Paw Print tank.

I chose purple, for that was the color of her collar. And the black is for the black racing stripe she had along her back.

The lace throughout is shaped like a paw print.

But what really makes it stand out and draws people in are the shoulder straps. My mother, being the creative fiber and fabric artist that she is, had no difficulty whipping up these unique straps. She also added a satin lining. So not only is this a work of art, but it is a mother-daughter effort. Truly very special to me.

I was reminded of how special when I wore it in to the office this week. Several coworkers commented on it, but one stopped me and asked not only where did I get it, but was it available in any other colors? When I said that I knit it myself, she asked if I’d knit one for her. I offered to knit her something else, but declined to make another paw print tank. She understood when I explained why it will always be one-of-a-kind.

Thank you!   4 comments

An odd thing happened today… Long Life Cats and Dogs honored me with an award. I say odd because I’m still learning all the ins and outs of blogging and the blogosphere. I never thought I’d ever start or even want to blog. I’ve always hated writing, journalling especially. Yet here I am. And there are even people out there reading it! People unrelated to me. People I only know from reading their usually funny and often poignant blogposts.

Miss D and I are so grateful. We will continue to share our WTF moments with you and look forward to reading about how your lives have been touched by the animals who choose to share it.

Now, the way I understand it, in order to truly accept this award, one must also

1. Share seven things about yourself.

2. Link back to the person who nominated you.

3. Place the award on your blog.

4. Nominate seven other fabulous bloggers, link them to this post and comment on their blogs, letting them know they have been nominated.

So, here goes:

1.  (I’m thinking. This is difficult!) Um…. OK, here’s one. I have a masters degree is statistics and am currently employed as a statistical programmer. The typical responses I receive when I tell people what I do are “Ah, sadistics”; “Ew”; and utter silence accompanied by a facial expression usually associated with foul smells. (I secretly hope for the third response. It makes me giggle.)

2. Boxing against a heavy bag is my new favorite form of exercise.

3. My favorite TV show these days is Phineas and Ferb. I have a hard time believing seven year olds would get even half the jokes.

4. I started knitting about 10 years ago as a way to meet new people after a terrible breakup. Signing up for that class was the best decision I ever made. Not only have I found an addictive and wonderful hobby, but I have made new friends and been welcomed into the most loving community of people the world over.

5. My favorite books are Silas Marner and Adam Bede, both by George Eliot.

6. I only read Silas Marner because all the protagonists in the books on my high school reading list mentioned how they were forced to read it in high school.

7. I have always considered myself to be extremely shy, but have only recently been diagnosed with social phobia. People with social phobia/anxiety have an intense and irrational fear of being watched and judged by others, and of doing things that will embarrass them. So, you can imagine how crazy it seems to me that I even joined Facebook, much less started blogging out here for all the world to see. And how much I shall treasure this award. (I have spent almost two hours on this list as I keep editing it for fear of embarrassing myself by sharing too much. And now I’m berating myself for mentioning that. And berating myself for berating myself. It’s a vicious cycle. OK, moving on…)

I would like to pass this wonderful award on to

Fear the Beards: two schnauzers after my own heart. Their photos always make me smile and send my heart aflutter. I love schnauzers.

Knit On Regardless: not only a witty writer, but a fantastic friend and a killer knitter 😀 I am so grateful to have you in my life (and we both know why)

M’Unique: nepotism at its best. If it weren’t for my mom and her blog, I never would have had the courage to start one of my own. Her gift for color, design, and creativity astound me.

I know I’m supposed to nominate seven, but I am honestly so new to this world that I simply haven’t started following others until very recently. But I follow these three religiously!

Pink Siesta Completed!   1 comment

OK, this post has nothing to do with Miss D or schnauzers, but it’s my blog and I can post whatever I want :p

Very excited because I’ve finally finished my Pink Siesta top. Doesn’t that sound like a great drink? Like maybe a pink grapefruit margarita? It’s off my needles and blocked, just waiting to dry.

Pink Siesta blocked and drying

This top was knit with Unplanned Peacock Studio‘s bamboo yarn in Magenta. I bought the yarn last year at Carolina Fiber Fest. I love the finished result and cannot wait to wear it. I bought this yarn originally for a cute twinset, but after I finished the sweater portion, I realized that while cute, the twinset is not flattering to my figure. 😦 So I frogged it and found a short-sleeved top with a more flattering drape. This is my first top-down project and I can see why top-down knitting is so popular. I don’t sew, so the fewer seams I have to finish at the end of a project, the better!

I still have many WIPs on my needles, including three pairs of socks, a warm winter shrug, a light lacy shawl, and a gift project not-to-be-named. Then I’ve got two shawl projects upcoming: the Nefarious Web knit-along which starts next week and another  mystery knit-a-long which starts in July. Woof! I was planning my next project (should I do that winter cardigan or the summer/fall t-shirt?) but now that I write it all down, I guess maybe I won’t be starting anything new for a while. Plenty WIPs to complete first.
