UPDATE! Mommy got to visit Rocky with Vet just now. He’s looking perkier than this morning but still pretty shaky. Vet says he might get to go home Friday if she’s able to get him on solid foods and meds. So it’s looking more likely that he’ll come home on Saturday. He was happy to see me and Vet said he hadn’t wagged his tail all day, but he wagged his tail when he saw Mommy! He’s been chatting with a cat staying in the crate above him named Tanaka. Tanaka just had a ton of teeth extracted and was telling him all about it. (Selena could relate!)
Mommy brought him Red, the red panda, to snuggle with but Rocky didn’t see Red because his cone kept getting in his way. So hopefully it’ll be a nice surprise when he finally turns around and sees it.
Vet said he has HGE, which I still haven’t looked up, but she said it’s usually not something that comes on slowly. It’s more of an acute thing, brought about by stress rather than environmental factors. So poor Rocky has been so anxious lately that he made himself sick. 😦
Well, when it rains it pours. Rocky was feeling poorly last night. This morning Mommy dropped him off with the vet. The diagnosis is something she called HGI (I think. The connection wasn’t too great). Basically, highly inflamed gut. High white cell count, indicating inflammation, but there’s no blockage or any other indicators.
Since he was so out of it this morning, he’s now in IV fluids. He must have been fighting with this for some time for it to be so inflamed. Vet said his other systems could shut down if we don’t get it under control. Mommy can visit him this afternoon but he’ll be staying with her as an inpatient for a couple of days. If he responds well to treatment, he might come home on Saturday.
Please keep poor Rocky in your thoughts today. Will post updates with photos if/when I can.
Poor guy. Has he been eating anything out in the yard or maybe picked up something at doggie camp?
Maybe that accounts for his sometimes strange standing and staring into space that we notice over here.

Could be pancreatitis, which is common in schnauzers. No matter what, paws, fingers and toes crossed for a speedy recovery.

So glad you took him in to see the vet so they can get on top of whatever is the cause. He seems strong enough to fight off most things, so let’s hope his stay with the vet will bring him around. Meanwhile, poor Rocky. If he begins to feel better, he will be so eager to be back in his own yard.

What a bummer. Hang in there, Rocky. Mom and I said prayers for you. And for your mom and the doctors and nurses taking care of you. Medicine is amazing. We have faith that you will be up and running soon. You are a tough cookie.
Love and licks,

Poor Rocky, hoping he is home and all better very soon. Have you ever looked into raw feeding? It helps them have a healthier gut. Best wishes.

we were doing a special diet that both Selena and Rocky enjoyed but the vet didn’t approve so we went back to the limited ingredient dry food we were on before. But after Selena’s teeth and now Rocky’s gut, we’re definitely looking at wet food and vet might suggest a prescription diet like Checkers had. We’ll see.

Yes, there’s a big difference in what Western medicine vets approve of and what holistic vets approve of. We’ve chosen to go holistic. This is the first time, and have no knowledge of what difference it will make as they age. Can only hope.

I can’t help thinking how he was thriving on the fresh food diet and going back to the dry kibble was disappointing to both of us. And now we’re going to ease into canned food. It’ll be easier for Selena to chew and hopefully better for Rocky’s digestion.

Hmm, perhaps your first sentence tells it all. I have stopped blindly following what vets – or doctors – tell me. I’m sure not trying to tell you what to do, just that sometimes we have to listen to our own instincts.
