Thunder!   7 comments

Poor Rocky has the “thunder shivers”! We’re having a typical NC June with humid days leading to scattered thunderstorms across the the area.

I don’t remember Rocky being afraid of thunder before. This seems to be a new behavior. I blame doggie day camp.

Rocky goes to camp twice a week. He’s such a social young boy who just wants to play with other dogs. Selena is not interested at all. So, camp is his outlet!

Rocky has learned excellent social etiquette from his fellow campers. Etiquette that translates to situations like joining Mommy at Bark in the Park game at Durham Bulls baseball.

Bark in the Park! Mommy’s shirt reads, “DOGS because people suck”

And to Mommy and me dates to the local coffee cafe.

But going to camp twice a week also means he’s had to ride through thunderstorms at camp. They bring all the dogs inside, of course. I think he’s picked up on how his playmates react and has learned to fear thunder.

Selena certainly doesn’t care. As poor Rocky shivers on my lap, Selena is zonked out at my side. Not worried one iota.

Luckily, I held onto Checkers’ old Thundershirt! Deita couldn’t wear it because the compression hurt her back. But Rocky is wearing it now. I have it very loose since he has never worn it before. He’s still anxious (look at those ears, poor baby) but the shivering has stopped and his interest in what’s going on around him has picked up. Still glued to Mommy’s side though!

  1. Oh we have some thunder issues here as well. Duffy wears his thundershirt and it seems to help for the mild storms. But last night the thunder shook the house and he was not to be consoled until he was in his kennel. The other two get a little antsy, but do OK. Those doggy camps do wonders don’t they? Ruby went to one for several weeks this spring and she loved it. Rocky is so cute in his shirt! Selena is like our Andy – nothin’ much excites him, either. Oh well, they sure are fun to have around, aren’t they.

    • Selena is similar to Deita in this. Anything that moves is a threat to be reckoned with, but thunder? Snoring away! Checkers loved day camp but I couldn’t trust Deita to go. Don’t think she would have enjoyed it anyway. So it’s been 7 years since I had a dog who goes to camp and who I can go out with to events or cafes people watching. I’ve missed it.

  2. I’m so glad Rocky is having fun at doggie day care. Lexi was in Selena’s camp about all that. I am sure you are right about his sudden fear of thunder. It’s great you still have the shirt. I have also read where associating storms with a fun activity helps. Playing ball and getting treats? Whatever it is he likes best other than just treats, cause just treats would be reinforcing it’s OK to be afraid, Hope that made sense. It’s so great he can go places with you now!

    • Yes, I may try playing a game for distraction next go-round. Mostly just staying calm and showing him that calm is the best reaction. Rocky’s camp even has a van that comes to the house to pick him up in the morning and drop him off in the evening! So convenient and a wonderful source of amusement to my non-dog-owning friends.

  3. He’s such a mommy’s boy anyway. He’s loving the attention. What’s the harm?
