Cry Revenge!   6 comments

I’m wet and miserable and I blame you, Mommy!

Mom says it’s my own <bleep>ing fault, because I was the one who insisted on doing night patrols in the cold, wet rain. But I blame you, Mommy! It’s time to cry, “Revenge!”

I will exact revenge, but I don’t yet know how. Maybe I will steal borrow Easy’s Big Book of Bad Ideas Rainy Day Activities.

Wow. This takes me back to my college applications. Answer the following question in 250 words or less: “If I were a tree, I’d be a…”

How about we share 7 things about Miss D, instead. That’s less daunting.

So take it away, Miss D! What are some of your favorite things?

  • Favorite toy: mommy’s gym towel. Runner up: mommy’s yarn. especially the angora bunny and the wool. not so much the cotton, linen, or other plant crap!
  • Favorite food: cheerios. and chicken. and pumpkin. and beef. and yogurt. and…
  • Favorite game: inside/outside. (Mom, can I go outside? Mom, can I come inside? Can I go outside? Inside? Outside? Inside?) This game annoys mommy really bad, which makes it that much more fun for me!
  • Favorite sleeping spot: on the sofa, stretched out on top of as many pillows as possible. Better yet, if I can sleep on my back with my paws in the air and still take up half the sofa, I’ll sleep really well!!
  • Favorite hiding place: under mommy’s bed. sshhhhh! don’t tell her
  • Favorite thing: Barking. I love barking. Bark bark bark woof woof yip woof bark! It is soooooo much fun! I could bark all night, if mommy would let me!! WOOF!
  • Mommy’s making me a new coat in my favorite colors: brown and pink! I hope she knits fast. It’s getting chilly in the mornings.

Not everyone on this list participates in these awards, but we love them anyway! Feel free to choose whichever award you want, or both, or neither.

Why???   6 comments

  1. Why does Deita insist on sitting on my feet? And if she’s not sitting on my feet, she’s sitting at my feet, between my legs.
  2. Why does she sit in the middle of the living room and staaaaaaaaaare at me?
  3. Why does she wait outside the bathroom while I shower then rush in to lick my feet dry afterwards?
  4. Why does Deita beg to be lifted up onto my bed only to beg to be let down two minutes later? It’s like, “Just checking that you’re still here, Mom.”
  5. Why does she act so restless all night and only settle down when I let her up on the couch to sit next to me? Ok, that question actually answers itself.
  6. Why does she “go boneless” in the car? She becomes a big lump, very heavy and difficult to move.
  7. Why does she run to the far-side gate in the backyard to bark at passersby? (The house has no windows on that side, so I can’t see where she is) There’s a perfectly good gate on the close-side of the house where I can keep my eye on her.
  8. Why does she go nuts over the kibble in her treat balls but turn her nose up at it in her food bowl? It’s the same kibble.
  9. Why is she fine when I open the front door but goes crazy when I open the glass screen door?
  10. Why does she have no qualms about pushing the bathroom door open with her nose but more often than not waits for me to open the back door and let her in?
  11. OMG, MIss D. Stop staaaaaaaaaaring at me!!!

9-11 Remembered   Leave a comment

It’s September 11th. Every year, they play the archive footage and every year I sit and watch and cry. I still have vivid memories, snapshots, of what I was doing that day. It’s too horrible to think about. It’s still unfathomable to me. Why do I do this to myself.

Miss D is restless. She feels my emotions are strong but cannot grasp them. She knows I’m upset, but not why. She doesn’t know what else to do but stay close. Jumping on and off the couch, begging to be let outside only to come back in moments later. Finally settling snuggled against my leg, head in my lap, waiting to be stroked. Lifting her head to stare at me when I stop.

Eleven years. It feels like last week. I won’t learn to knit for another 2 years. My darling Checkers was 4, but we won’t meet for another 3 years. Miss D wasn’t even born yet. Not for three years. I’ve moved twice since then. Held three different jobs.

It’s surreal. This day. It’s even Tuesday, September 11th, again. I feel like this day just should not happen again. Like these events have left a physical scar on the calendar itself. They retire hurricane names, why not dates? We should go from the 10th straight to the 12th. Skip the 11th altogether.

The footage ends, and a commercial touts the latest ridiculous “reality” show. Surreal.

Rain, Rain Go Away   2 comments

Today’s WTF moment provided by … thunder.

We had thunderstorms roll through today. The kind the weathermen warn you about. Drenching rain. Loud thunder. Real loud. So loud it rattled the windows. And Miss D. Apparently.

Every time the thunder rattled the windows, she barked. Not the “Hey You!” bark. The “I KNOW YOU’RE OUT THERE! SHOW YOUR FACE! I’M GONNA KICK YOUR A$$” bark. WTF?

Then again, maybe she was just upset that her nap was being disturbed.

You weren’t gonna use this pillow, were you, Mom?

You’re a weird dog, Miss D.

Ooh, La La!   8 comments

Miss D got a haircut! Her new groomer, Ciara at Ooh La La, is a miracle worker. Miss D’s eyes get so weepy, I feel like I’m fighting a losing battle. Her mustache was so matted around the eyes, we had to shave it. But look at her now! All smiles!

Miss D has had a mobile groomer ever since she joined the household. Checkers’ regular groomer refused to take Deita. She was not afraid of Deita but was afraid of her high energy. Back then, Miss D got a little crazier out in public than she does now.

But after Miss D’s groomer moved to Chicago, I’ve had a hard time finding another decent groomer who would come to the house. I’ve heard good things about Ooh La La, so I made the appointment and hoped for the best. Miss D was on her best behavior today! She was talkative and antsy and I’m told she did react when other dogs came into view, but that’s all!

And she never reacted to the groomers themselves. Anyone who has come to my house knows what a big deal that is. Probably my biggest worry about taking her in today. First impressions count after all!

Yay, Miss D!

Okay, question to all the weepy-eyed dog owners out there. What do you do? I’ve dealt with schnauzer bumps, hot spots, itchy skin and allergies, but never this. I need to up the cleaning sessions, but is there a trick to keeping them clear?

Things that go bump in the night   4 comments

Today’s WTF moment provided by … doorways.

WTF is up with dogs and entryways? Are they secretly trying to kill us? Hoping when we get up in the middle of the night that we’ll trip over their furry little bodies & knock our head against the bathroom sink?

Why, Miss D? do you like the comfort of the carpet under your chin but the linoleum of the bathroom is cool for your tummy? Or is this some secret plot to get my woolly yarn stash all to yourself?

Don’t you dare give me that hurt look after I trip! I did not mean to kick you or step on your toes. You did this to yourself. How is it that your tiny frame can somehow fill the entire hallway end to end?
